Infrared Inspection

Infrared Inspection

Infrared inspection is a technology that allows a camera to detect parts of any given piece of equipment that are emitting more heat than usual. Infrared rays are a part of the spectrum that are invisible to the eye, lying somewhere between visible red and microwaves. Infrared rays are emitted by any object with heat, and one type of infrared detection device would be night vision goggles. Infrared inspection uses this technology to detect potential problems in equipment before they become a bigger concern.

Infrared inspection is considered a predictive maintenance technique, referring to its ability to predict where there may be trouble before anything actually happens. Relying on the principle that most electrical equipment will begin to produce abnormal amounts of heat before total failure, infrared inspection allows the equipment to be inspected and repaired before damage occurs, possibly destroying surrounding equipment as well and causing higher costs.
